Chapter Six

Steak wasn’t working.

After five days of trying to coax Nash’s wolf to trust her, he was no closer than on day one.

Physically, he looked better, though he remained scarred. His face had taken a shot up the side of it and his ear was split, but had healed fairly well.

Physically, the wolf looked good, but mentally, he was just as limited as ever. Bracing herself, Summer descended the stairs to the basement and got the exact reaction she had every other time she had come down. His animosity always hurt. It drained her, but it also made her realize something. How could he have kept his wolf, one so large and dominant, pinned up inside of himself so tightly? She was beginning to realize just how powerful Nash had really been. Her wolf was lower in the Pack rank, not because she was female, but because of her wolf’s natural personality and hesitancy to fight. She was a peace-maker. Nash, on the other hand, had been housing a Death Bringer. She was learning more and more about him.

Just like the days before, she positioned herself by the cage, too far for the danger of his teeth to reach her.

She had cut the steak into chunks in the kitchen and now tossed one into his cage. He ignored it.

“You’re getting too skinny,” she told him.

Nash paced to the back of the cage and sat down as far away from her as he could. Well, that was a welcome change. Usually, he was at the cage trying to eat her the entire time spent down here.

Summer tossed another chunk of steak into his cage, and then scooted a few inches closer.

Straightening her black lace dress, she said, “I’m supposed to be going to your funeral today. That’s why I’m wearing this dress.” Summer dared a glance at the back of the cage, but the dark brindle wolf was just staring at her with unblinking, gold eyes.

She cleared her throat and tossed another chunk of steak through the bars. “I’m not going.”

“Why not?” she asked in a deep voice, pretending to have a conversation with Nash. “Because,” she answered, “It’s weird to go to a funeral of someone who is still alive.” She shrugged and drew her legs up underneath her and leaned her cheek on the wall as she talked to him. “To me, you are still alive.”

Nash’s wolf blinked.

“Did you see that?” Wolf asked out loud. Summer hated when she did that. She’d been practicing talking to Wolf in her mind instead of out loud, but so far, she was pretty C-Team about it.

“See what?” she groused.

“I thought…I thought I saw something. His eyes.”

But when Summer studied his eyes, she didn’t see anything different. Just the same gold emptiness that was always there. “Shh,” she shushed the wolf. “Anyway, Vernon planned a huge shindig for you. There are three kegs of that beer you like. And I think there is a taco bar. He ordered everyone to be there, but I don’t like taking orders.
